XStart - Application Launcher
There are various ways you can access your favorite applications. You can launch them from the Start menu, you can pin them to the taskbar, and you can create shortcuts on your desktop. Or you can get a handy application launcher such as XStart, put shortcuts to your applications, files, or folders on it, and thus have easy access to them.
XStart’s installation file weighs in at less than 1MB. Such a lightweight download will only take a moment to complete. Going through the setup wizard will take little time as well. XStart presents you with a simple setup wizard and clicking through it is a simple process.
The interface is a simple, blank window – it is blank because there are no shortcuts on it just yet. To hide XStart, right click on its interface and pick the Hide option from the context menu. To bring it back into focus, double click on the system tray icon, or right click it and select Show; you can also use the Ctrl + Win + Down arrow keyboard shortcut. You can customize the way the interface looks by using themes (you will have to download them from the web as only the default theme is included), by changing the window size, and by changing the background and text color.
As mentioned above, XStart’s interface is a blank window because there are no shortcuts on it. Adding shortcuts is a very simple process: just take a shortcut and then drag and drop it onto XStart. Take the shortcut to your Firefox browser, for example, then drag and drop it onto XStart. When you click on the Firefox icon in XStart’s interface, the browser will launch. You can do the same with shortcuts for files and folders. You can arrange the shortcuts on XStart’s interface and you can group them in folders.
30 days is the amount of time you have at your disposal to test XStart for free. Once that trial period is over, you will have to get a license to keep using the application.
From XStart’s interface you can launch your favorite applications and have easy access to your most used files and frequently accessed folders. It’s a very handy application launcher.
Pros
Simple installation process that takes but a moment to complete. Add shortcuts for files, folders, and applications to XStart’s interface. You can customize the application’s interface. Bring XStart into focus by using a keyboard shortcut.
Cons
Free to use for a 30-day trial. The interface feels dated.
